Episode 22

While it’s true fear is often the driver behind the limitation of Christian liberty, you should realize it isn’t the only motivator. Sadly, there are many Christians who seek to limit the liberty of others from a false position of moral superiority.

Since obeying the law has zero bearing on one’s standing before God or even the maintaining of this standing, the Gospel distortions of grace and do these things or grace but don’t do these things end up being motivated by a legalistic desire to feel morally superior to other believers.

Here’s the thought process behind such a position… Though it’s obvious all Christians are saved by Jesus, it is the Christian who does (this) and abstains from doing (that) that is morally superior - a better Christian!

The truth is these arguments that advocate limiting Christian liberty oppose the idea of “Grace alone” because they want what they do or don’t do to play a role in their sanctification. And yet, the problem is this position is completely contrary to the Gospel… What you do or abstain from doing has zero bearing on a your right-standing before God.

Understand… If you have the conviction that you need to forgo some liberty, you have that freedom - as long as you realize the following… One - You have no right to impose that conviction onto others… Two - Separating yourself from those who do enjoy that liberty is wrong… And three - Holding that position does not make you a better Christian!

You see as Christ-followers we are all called to only one moral standard… Jesus - not each other! Friend, grace really does change everything.
